What activities/ideas wouldyou do/have on a 8,000 person college campus for a student debt week?

I am a student leader on a small rural college campus in Minnesota and we are hosting a student debt week to make our student aware and involved in student debt issues. We have some ideas ourselves, but any help or ideas would be appreciated. We are trying to get students to come to our Rally Day at the Minnesota State Capitol on Feb 14 and we want students to understand the issues surrounding them. Anything that you can provide will help our cause!! On behalf of our Student Senate and me included, thank you for your help!!!!!

    contact your local bank they should have several established programs that you can use. Have a program about creating a budget, and balancing checkbooks. Have a speaker discuss the positive and negatives of having credit cards. And probably a forum of successful alum to talk about what are the steps moneywise after you graduate to get out of debt if you have loans and want to buy a house etc.

    What a great idea! Congrats to you and your Student Senate for organizing this project.

    Here are some cost effective ideas to share:

    Ask a professor on campus (perhaps someone who teaches Investing or Finance) to hold a workshop on investment options. You may wish to have reps from local investment agencies or banks there to sign interested students up (Make sure that your school approves this beforehand. Some schools do not approve of having banks/financial institutions on campus soliciting students.)

    Hold an investing competition. Students can be given a set amount of money to invest in different stock markets. At the end of a set amount of time the student whose investment increased the most wins. Perhaps you could have a small workshop or handout to show students the basics of playing the stock market. (Note: There are also free programs online that let you ‘play’ the market.)

    Ask your Vice-President of Finance (the person responsible for the University’s budget to hold a workshop on budget management.

    Moster.com offers FREE (no strings attached) programs to colleges. Our school brings them in during Orientation to do a program called College Road trip. (I think that is what it is called.) They also numerous programs, including one on budgeting. I HIGHLY recommend bringing them to campus. They have great speakers that are interactive and energetic and they bring TONS of free giveaways. Defiantly give them a shot. (And yes – it really is FREE!)
